About me and my model railways

Models
I am interested in the multi-disciplinary nature of building a working model railway as a means of relaxation, and as a means of capturing the feel of a time and place.

I have two layouts: a Hornby Dublo 3-rail layout (11ft x 6ft) which I have exhibited in Toronto and England, and a modern 2 rail OO gauge layout (16ft x 11ft) built to fine scale, hand laid track and based on LNER/BR practice, late steam and early diesel. An entirely fictitious "Leven Junction", set in East Yorkshire, in the 1950s.
Unfortunately, due to lack of space, my layouts are currently in storage.
Model Railway Articles
I have put together a database of article references taken from themodelling press, listing over 3000 references and with extensive search facilities. This index has been continually developed since 1980, and features articles from that period to the present. It was originally developed on MS Word, on a Mac.

The articles give indications of photos or drawings of prototypical engines, rolling stock and buildings that appeared in the original article.

Many articles give descriptions of various modelling techniques.

The articles refer mainly to LNER and early BR, other regions and Companies are being added.

This database is updated monthly, so visit occasionally to see additions.

For the technically minded, the database is written in MySql®/PHP®, and I use Apache® v1.3 running under Windows XP® for off-line testing.
Hornby Dublo Catalogs:
I have done a comparison of issues 1, 2, and 4 of the catalogs, it is a database with a comprehensive set of searches pre-programmed.
Contructional Articles:
I like to 'superdetail' all my models, and experiment with new techniques.

I have written a detailed description of the method I use for constructing point motors, including photos, and I am planning to write further constructional articles.

I have researched and listed a number of off-site articles.
Model Buildings:
I have the usual collection ofSuperquick® and other proprietary models, but I particularly like to scratch build in card and plastic strip. I haven't done anything large or difficult yet, but I will continue to experiment. The foam sandwich board available at art stores has been successfully used by many.Photos
Railway Books:
I have a collection of about 220 books, mainly LNER and Early BR. They are entered on a database, which I will make available on-line, for reference.
Other
Diesel Numbering by original scheme is listed,
along with Diesel Numbering by class scheme.
